Dr. Mai Zheng at the Dept of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECpE) of Iowa State University (ISU) is looking for two PhD students to join his research group in Fall 2019. Students with solid background in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or Electrical Engineering are welcome to apply.

===About the research:
Dr. Zheng's research group work on real-world high-impact computer systems. Recent research foci include (but not limited to) solid-state drives, non-volatile memories, Linux file systems, and cloud/big data storage systems. Their work appears in venues such as FAST, OSDI, ICS, ASPLOS, PPoPP, TOCS as well as in media including ZDNet, StorageMojo, Slashdot, the RISKS Digest, etc. Their research is supported by U.S. National Science Foundation as well as industry. More information is available at http://www.ece.iastate.edu/~mai/.

===About ISU:
ISU is one of the 62 members of AAU (https://www.aau.edu/who-we-are/our-members) which lead the research and education that contribute to the progress and well-being of modern society. It is the largest university in the state of Iowa, and is classified as "R1: Doctoral Universities - Highest Research Activity"  by the Carnegie Foundation. ISU is unique among U.S. universities. For example, it is the only university that has a U.S. Dept of Energy research laboratory physically located on its campus (https://web.iastate.edu/about/). As another example, ISU has a 400+ acre Research Park (http://www.isupark.org/), which was awarded a $1.7 million grant from the U.S. Economic Development Administration in Sept 2018 to support startup companies and nurture scientific and technological entrepreneurial ventures. A number of ECpE professors & students have created successful startups via ISU Research Park.

Based on the US News & World Report (v2019), ISU is #43 in "Best Engineering Schools". More specifically:
Electrical Engineering: #39
Computer Engineering: #43
Computer Science: #61

In addition, ISU is located in the City of Ames, which ranks #2 in "Best College Towns" in U.S. and is one of the "Top 100 Places to Live" (https://livability.com/).

===How to apply:
Information about applying to ISU is available at https://www.admissions.iastate.edu/graduate/index.php. If you are interested in joining Dr. Zheng's research group, please mention Dr. Zheng in your application. Meanwhile, you are welcome to write an email introducing yourself (e.g., project/research experience) and send the email along with your CV, (unofficial) transcript, and/or other supporting materials (e.g., publications) to Dr. Zheng (mai@iastate.edu). Dr. Zheng will contact you if there is a good match.

Finally, Dr. Zheng recommends two articles to all students considering doing a PhD in CS-related areas:
(1) A professor's perspective: https://www.cs.purdue.edu/homes/dec/essay.phd.html
(2) A PhD student's perspective: http://blog.skanev.org/2013/03/why-not-do-phd-in-computer-science.html
If after reading the two articles, you are still interested in doing a PhD, you are welcome to apply to Dr. Zheng's group. Dr. Zheng will be more than happy to pass his hands-on experience on both academia and industry to you and help you grow and succeed, as long as you are hardworking, responsible, determined, and have the desire to become an expert in a challenging and high-impact area in the near future.
